2. Gap Extra Heavyweight French Terry Hoodie, $64 sale (reg $128). Biggest weight number (on sale only).
Why it wins: Gap Canada had it at $64 in Navy Blue Uniform when we checked, part of a 50% off event. Gap lists it as 650-gram heavyweight French terry, the biggest weight number on any page in this guide. Oversized fit, hits at the hip, drawcord hood, kangaroo pocket. 82% cotton, 18% recycled polyester. XS to XXL. If your colour is on the $64 ticket, this beats ours on price and on paper weight.
The catch: Regular price is $128, so only the sale counts for this guide. Other colours showed $102 on the same page, which is over budget. Gap doesn't say what the 650 grams is measured against, so it's not a clean GSM comparison with our 420. Polyester blend, not 100% cotton. Gap says to go down one to two sizes for a classic fit, so check the size guide. The standard Gap Heavyweight Oversized Hoodie was $54 to $86 depending on colour (reg $108), 86% cotton, with no weight listed.
Best for: Max heft for the money while the sale holds and your colour is the cheap one.
Gap Extra Heavyweight French Terry Hoodie
3. Uniqlo Sweat Oversized Pullover Hoodie, $49.90. Best cheap oversized.
Why it wins: Uniqlo Canada had it at $49.90 when we checked, with every size in stock online. Relaxed, oversized silhouette. Seven colours (Dark Green, Gray, Dark Gray, Black, Beige, Navy, Purple), XS to XXL. More colours than ours and about $35 less.
The catch: The body is 67% polyester, 33% cotton. No fabric weight listed. Uniqlo's care instructions say don't tumble dry. You get the oversized shape at a mall price, not a heavyweight cotton hoodie.
Best for: You want the boxy look under $50 and weight isn't the point.
Uniqlo Sweat Oversized Pullover Hoodie
4. Roots Beavermark Hoodie, $81 sale (reg $108). Best Canadian heritage name.
Why it wins: Roots had the men's Beavermark Hoodie at $81 with 25% off applied when we checked (regular $108). 78% organic cotton, 22% recycled polyester fleece at 330 gsm. Relaxed fit, drawcord hood, front welt pockets, beaver patch at the chest. XS to XXL. A Canadian brand you can try on in store.
The catch: Full price is over $100, so only the sale ticket counts. 330 gsm is lighter than our 420. It's a relaxed fit, not oversized, so you'd size up for the boxy look.
Best for: Roots fans who want a warm everyday hoodie while the discount holds.
5. Aritzia Cozy Sweatfleece Mega Hoodie, $95. Most polished oversized fleece.
Why it wins: Aritzia Canada had the Mega Hoodie at $95 when we checked. Oversized cut with dropped shoulders. Cozy Sweatfleece with a brushed back and sueded face, 78% cotton, 22% polyester. Double-layer hood, ribbed cuffs and hem. If you want it less roomy, the Cozy Sweatfleece Perfect Hoodie was $85, same as ours.
The catch: Aritzia describes the fabric as midweight fleece, and no GSM is listed. The size run on the Mega is 2XS to XL, so bigger or taller guys may run out of room. Inseam pockets, not a kangaroo pocket. You pay $10 more than ours for a fabric Aritzia calls midweight.
Best for: You already like Aritzia's fleece and the size run works for your frame.
Aritzia Cozy Sweatfleece Mega Hoodie
6. Champion Reverse Weave Hoodie, $45 sale (reg $75). Best cheap heavyweight classic.
Why it wins: InfluenceU in Montreal had the Reverse Weave pullover at $45 (regular $75) when we checked. 12-ounce heavyweight fleece, reverse weave construction, brushed lining, two-ply drawcord hood, ribbed side panels, kangaroo pocket. XS to XXL. Hard to beat on heft per dollar.
The catch: Athletic fit, not oversized. You'd have to size up for a boxy look. The sale is at one Canadian retailer, so stock and sizes move. Cotton/poly blend. Logos on the chest and sleeve. Champion is a US brand, so if you order from a US store you're back to tax, duties, and brokerage.
Best for: You want a proven heavy hoodie under $50 and you're fine with a closer fit.

The catch: Carhartt calls it midweight, and it's half polyester in most colours. Loose fit is roomy, but it's workwear-shaped, not a streetwear oversized cut. Carhartt's own Canadian site showed us US pricing, so confirm the live CAD price there before you buy. Carhartt is a US brand. Buy from a Canadian shop and skip the border fees.
