15 Canadian Hat Brands Worth Wearing (2026)
Most caps start the same way: a blank sewn overseas, a logo stitched on later. Canadian hat companies are no different. A few make their hats here, start to finish. Some never say.
They're all on this list, and we say which is which. Some brands spell it out. Some leave you guessing.
Full disclosure: we make hats too. We're on the list, last, and we'll tell you where ours are made.
No rankings. Updated for fall 2026, with prices in CAD checked in October.
What makes a hat Canadian?
Four different things, and the label rarely tells you which.
Made in Canada means the hat is cut and sewn, knit or blocked here. Canadian-made hats are the rarest kind, and you pay for them.
Finished in Canada means an imported blank, embroidered or patched here. This is how most caps with a Canadian logo get made. Fine, as long as nobody pretends otherwise.
Designed here, made overseas means a Canadian brand designs it and a factory overseas makes it. Most of the industry, us included.
Unstated means a Canadian brand that doesn't say where its hats come from. Common, and not automatically a red flag.
Same idea as our lists of Canadian clothing brands and Canadian hoodie brands.
Tilley
Every Canadian uncle owns one, and he isn't wrong. Tilley started in Toronto in 1980, and the $99 T3 Classic is still cut and sewn there. They say 23 pairs of hands go into every hat made in that plant. Not the whole line, though. The Airflo hats, caps, beanies and even some cotton T3s, like the Waxed T3, say made in China. Every Tilley page lists where it's made. Read it.
Roots
The default answer, and partly the right one. Filter Roots' Made in Canada section for hats and you get 11 results. All 11 are the $54 Worldwide Cap. The Canada one is cotton twill, and the page says Made in Canada. The everyday Cooper beaver caps and cabin toques say nothing about where they're made. If made here is the point, buy the Worldwide.
Canada Goose
The one that surprises people. The parkas are the made-in-Canada story. The hats aren't. We checked 20 on its Canadian site. The toques and bucket hats say made in Europe. The caps say made in Asia. Its Made in Canada collection runs to about 180 products, and not one is a hat. The Standard Toque is $125. Warm, sure. Just not made here.
Kombi
Montreal's ski glove company since 1961. The way Kombi tells it, a McGill ski racer designed a glove with knuckle protection. Nancy Greene wore Kombi when she won the first World Cup in 1967, they say. Toques are the sideline. A few say made in Canada, like the $39.95 Street Merino Toque. Most say nothing, so check the page.
Herschel Supply Co.
Named after Herschel, Saskatchewan, the small town where three generations of the founders' family grew up. Based in Vancouver since 2009. The backpacks are why you know the name, and the Whaler 6 Panel Cap rides along at $35 regular. We couldn't find where Herschel's hats are made. Not on the product page, not on the About page, not in the help pages.
Smithbilt Hats
Calgary's white cowboy hat. In 1948, 250 Stampeders fans rode a train to the Grey Cup in Toronto wearing them. It's been the city's handshake ever since. Smithbilt blocks, shapes and hand-finishes its hats in Calgary. The felt comes from makers around the world, by their own account. The White Hat starts at $535 in fur felt, $225 in wool.
Canadian Hat 1918
Montreal millinery with a century behind it. The McCord Stewart Museum traces it to 1908, when two brothers opened Canadian Hat Frame. Pieces like the Floria, a felt fedora with earflaps, are made in Montreal for $159. Some caps only say designed in Canada. One beanie is made in Tuscany.
Crown Cap
Winnipeg, since 1934, when it made work caps for Prairie farm workers through the drought. The wool railroad hat is still made there, $66. The page warns it can take up to 10 business days to make. Plenty of the fur and shearling aviators are made in Winnipeg too. Most of the summer hats, and some aviators, say made in China. Its VP puts the Winnipeg share at 40 to 45 per cent of styles.
Province of Canada
By their own account, everything they sell is made in Canada. Every hat page says so. The Heart Baseball Hat joins the two halves of their flag logo into a heart. It's $56. Cotton doesn't grow here, so the fibre comes in. The sewing doesn't leave.
Local Laundry
Calgary, and stubborn about making things here. Almost all of their own caps and toques carry a Made in Canada badge. The Giving Toque is $50, and every one sold sends another to a Canadian shelter. They count more than 12,000 items donated so far. The custom caps from their design studio don't carry the badge, so don't assume.
MTN.HEAD
You might know them as Muttonhead. Same Toronto crew, new name. The 5 Panel caps are cut and sewn in Canada and embroidered in Toronto. Most of their toques are knit in Montreal. The Local Quack 5 Panel is $60. One exception, clearly labelled: the trucker hat is sewn in New York.
Lillie & Cohoe
Two women started it at the Nelson Christmas Market in the early nineties. Last year the company was sold, and the studio is moving to Fort Langley. The making stays in B.C.: every hat is hand-cut, sewn and shaped in Canada, by their own account. Known for packable wide-brim sun hats. The Lake Country Pamela is $175.
Maple Beaver
New, out of London, Ontario. It started in 2024 on a family cruise full of red American caps. Their organic cotton dad hat is made in Canada start to finish, $49. The flag caps are different, and the fine print says so. The blanks may come from Bangladesh or Vietnam. The embroidery is done in Ontario.
Whiskey Road Hat Co.
Caledon, Ontario, since 2020. You pick a cap, you pick a patch, and they sew the patch on in house. The Canadian, a red and off-white two-tone cap with a flag patch, is $44. We couldn't find where the caps themselves are made. Their Canadian Made patch is a design, not a note on where the cap was made.
TEAMLTD
Us. Mississauga, since 2013. Some of ours are named after places you actually go: Muskoka, Kawartha Lakes, the Canadian Shield. Designed here, made overseas. Canadian-owned, like most of the industry. The Muskoka Snapback is $45, and nothing in our hat lineup costs more. Need your own logo on a hat, for a team or a company? That's LTD Customs, our custom side.
What's actually on our heads
A Tilley on the boat, the Canadian-made one. A Kombi or Local Laundry toque from November to March. A Smithbilt if Stampede's on the calendar.
And something with a lake on the front for the dock.
