How to Tie-Dye and Bleach Dye like a Boss

Colour Tie-Dye

Supplies:

  • TEAMLTD Savage White Tee or Hoodie

  • Tie-Dye Kit (available on Amazon, Walmart or Michaels

  • Gloves

  • Rubber Bands

  • Measuring Cup

  • Paper Towel

  • Fork

  • Plastic Shopping Bag or Zip Lock Bag

Directions:

1. Get yourself a TEAMLTD Savage White Hoodie/White Tee:

  • TEAMLTD Tees are 100% cotton and Hoodies are 70% Cotton/30% Polyester

2. The spiral (we like using this method):

  • Press the fork wherever you want the spiral to originate and spin the shirt around the fork like you're spiralling a mean bowl of spaghetti. Make sure to keep it nice and tight

3. Elastic bands:

  • Remove the fork and start to add elastic bands across the garment (be sure to keep the tight spiral) adding 3-4 bands to section the garment into a pie-shape

4. Time to dye:

  • Before you start to use the dye, make sure you have a plastic layer and some cardboard underneath to avoid staining any surfaces
  • Be sure to wear gloves so you don't dye your hands
  • Use whatever colours you want and squirt the dye into each of the sections (for the most colourful results, use a different colour in each section (slice of pie). If you want more white, leave some sections untouched

5. Flip the garment upside-down:

  • Now repeat step 4 on the other side of the Tee/Hoodie

6. The waiting game:

  • Toss the garment into a plastic or zip-lock bag and seal it tight. Leave overnight for the best results (approx. 8 hours)

7. The Unwrapping:

  • In the sink/tub or with a hose outside, take the garment out of the bag and run cold tap water over it as you start to remove the elastic bands and see your final product
  • You can now either let your garment air dry or put it in the dryer (be mindful of cotton shrinking in the dryer)

Bleach Dye

Supplies:

  • TEAMLTD Savage Black Tee or Hoodie

  • Basic Bleach - we used Clorox (make sure you purchase concentrated bleach, not pre-diluted)

  • Gloves

  • Old Towel or Drop Cloth

  • Spray Bottle

  • Water

  • Measuring cup

  • Rubber Bands

  • Fork

Directions:

1. Get yourself a dark-coloured TEAMLTD garment

  • TEAMLTD Savage Black Hoodie/Black Tee

  • Other dark coloured garments will produce a cool colour fade

2. Prepare your area:

  • You will either want to do this in an industrial sink or bathtub, or outdoors where you won’t risk staining anything with the bleach

  • Roll up your sleeves and make sure you’re wearing clothing you don’t mind ruining a little in case the bleaching gets a little crazy

3. Make your bleach mix:

  • Make sure to get your gloves on and have good ventilation if you’re indoors, as bleach can be irritating to the skin and dangerous to inhale

  • Use a 1:1 ratio of water and bleach and mix it in the spray bottle (we used Clorox bleach)

4. The spiral (we like using this method):

  • Press the fork wherever you want the spiral to originate and spin the shirt around the fork like you’re spiralling a mean bowl of spaghetti. Make sure to keep it nice and tight

5. Elastic bands:

  • Remove the fork and start to add elastic bands across the garment (be sure to keep the tight spiral) adding 3-4 bands to section the garment into a pie-shape

6. Bleaching:

  • Use the spray bottle with the bleach and water mix and spray the garment with your desired amount of bleach (to get a strong bleach effect you will want to spray around 500ml of the diluted 1:1 bleach mixture)

  • After you spray one side, flip it over and do the same to the other side

7. Waiting:

  • For a garment made from 70% Cotton/30% Polyester, leave the product to sit for 12-14 minutes (you’ll notice the bleach doing it’s job)

  • For a garment made from 100% Cotton, leave it to sit for 8-10 minutes

  • **Make sure you do not leave the garment for too long or else it could compromise the quality of the fabric

8. Washing the garment:

  • Remove the elastic bands from the shirt

  • Rinse out your shirt under a tap to wash out some bleach

  • Next, throw the garment in the washing machine with detergent (don’t mix with other clothing that you don’t want bleached)

9. Drying:

  • You can either air dry or use a dryer - be mindful of the garment shrinking if made from cotton
