Triple-stitched main seams, antique-finish snaps, two flap chest pockets with snaps, two-snap adjustable cuffs, pleats across the back yoke for movement. It beats ours on shell fabric: all cotton, with a listed weight.

The catch: It's $10 more than ours and lands one cent under the cap. 3XL was $164.99 and call-to-order, so it's over budget. The retailer lists chest pockets only. Relaxed fit is workwear roomy. Carhartt is a US brand, so buy it from a Canadian shop like this one and skip the border fees.

Best for: You want 100% cotton flannel and a workwear build, and $150 is fine.

Northern Sun rates it comfortable from +15°C to -5°C. Eight colours, Small to 3XL. Cheaper than ours, more colours, and a 60-day return window that beats our 30.

The catch: It's a sherpa fleece, fuzzy side out. No woven shell, so it's a different look and a different jacket from a sherpa-lined flannel or denim. Free shipping starts over $150, so one jacket alone pays shipping. Returns and exchanges carry a flat return-shipping fee. The Quechua MH 500 Sherpa Fleece was $54.99: 300 g/m² polyester, oversized cut, no hood.

The catch: It looks like hiking gear, because it is. Main fabric is 75% polyester, 25% acrylic. The MH 500 is lighter than it sounds: Decathlon's own lab puts its comfort range at 10 to 13°C without a jacket over it, and Decathlon recommends against tumble drying it. That's a fall layer, not a winter jacket.
